Wonderful compilation with a fantastic and detailed booklet.
Our new favorite ragtime band. Great music and great musicians.
Most of the tunes, and nearly all the performers, were new to me, as this is not the genre I normally follow. So I viewed the album as an educational tool, and at that it did not disappoint! It's taking me several sittings to read the entire book. Rivermont is justly famous for its comprehensive liner notes.
Looks good, but I haven't yet taken i for a spin. Is there an".MP3" option for this one?
Ever since I was a kid George Olsen was always one of my faves. Not the least of which because of the fact that he is a fellow Oregonian! His band started out in Portland, Oregon just 45 miles North of me. Years ago, I purchased Volume. 2, and was over joyed to see Volume 1, so I had to get it! Thanks again!
I've know Tom, and his work, for some years now. His compositions for Charlie Chaplin films was exemplary, and so too with this work. We missed his live presentation of this work recently, so hope he will do that again soon.
The Rivermont LP pressing and package is very well done. The CD releases are too. Congrats on the interesting and important artistic work you present.
This brings history right into the studio. Another great Rivermont collectable.
This selection is added to my Rivermont collection, making it a well rounded library.
What a treasure! Hearing these songs we all know as they were when they were new is quite thrilling. And, the fidelity is amazing. I expected a scratch, recovered 78 rpm sound. These recordings are clean. Congratulations to the recovery crew!
Tom Roberts' 17 movement suite of compositions is a brilliant companion to the silent film "Nosferatu". Best known as a jazz pianist, an expert in the music emanating from its origins in the early 20th century. He has recorded - on Rivermont as well - as a piano soloist and with the leading practitioners, giving fresh interpretations of traditional jazz. To that point, he also accompanied the "image destroyer" iconoclast, Leon Redbone.
A composer, Tom Roberts has revealed his inspiration for "Nosferatu" being from early German Romantic composers like Schumann, Schubert, and Brahms, as well as from traditional Romanian music - showing, once again, the classical training and interests of most jazz pianists ranging from Jelly Roll Morton to Chick Corea (not to forget those from before and beyond).
Thanks to Rivermont for supporting Tom Roberts' artful composition. It is a bloody good work for the bloodless.
Amazing record!
Honestly, calling it a record feels disingenuous. This compilation set is more of an immersive experience. The packaging, the recordings, all of it. If you're even a passing fan of Appalachian music or culture, this is a must own.
This is such an amazing collection and put together with such care. Extensive liner notes and a great celebration of this historic recording session.
Stimulating collections of both new ragtime music & 1920s novelty piano. More of both please, particularly Ragged.
Splendid performance as expected of Brahmin Bellhops & another 'intriguing' collectionof words & tunes by Buck
This bundle epitomised everything I've come to admire (& indeed expect) from content produced by Rivermont. More ragtime & early jazz please.
